Starting a Gratitude Journal

Why Gratitude? Because it helps you appreciate the positive things in your life.

Gratitude turns the bad things into good. How often do you hear individuals complaining about problems at work? Be grateful for your job; the money coming in at the end of each month and the challenges you have. There is always something to be grateful for, even when things don’t seem to be going that well.

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learnt a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get ill, and if we got ill, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful” Buddha

Giving thanks for what we have in our lives brings us more to be grateful for.

Even the little things like a ‘thank you’ will bring in positive results.

Easy does it, Gratitude should not be a chore!

Expressing gratitude shouldn’t be a chore. Spend just two to three minutes a day to say thank you for five things you are grateful for. Start by either doing it when you get up or just before going to bed. Write them down or just say them to yourself. This will start to change your perspective on your day and your life.

Gratitude journals tend to be more effective when used at the end of the day. Try to do this regularly. At first you may want to do it two or three times a week. Try this if every night is too much and then increase it at a pace you feel comfortable with.    

When you start off you may look for things that you have around you on a regular and constant basis, like your house, your bed, your car or electrical appliances that make your life easier. As you progress, try to think of five things from the day just gone to be grateful for. This will give you an awareness of the new things coming into your experience and those that would otherwise go unnoticed.    

You could play a gratitude game. Try this, you are woken up the morning by an alarm clock precisely when you wanted to, you get up, say thank you. You had a great night sleep, thank you to your bed for such a cosy, comfortable nights sleep. You switch on the radio and go to the bathroom to wash, you turn on the tap. Say thank you to the utility company that provides you with the water; the radio station for a great show; the utility company for the means to heat your water. You wash your face with soap; thank you for the company that produces your soap; you brush your teeth, thank you for my toothbrush and toothpaste. You have a shower or a bath, thank you to those that invented a means to bathe yourself with such ease. You need to dry yourself, thank you for your towel. Then there’s your hair. You may want to dry it, straighten it or style it. How many electrical and cosmetic products have you used? Thank you for them all. You get dressed in great looking clothes. Someone designed and made then, another thank you. You might go down a flight of stairs. Don’t they make life easier! You have breakfast. How many choices do you have? I think you’re getting the idea.

There are so many things to be grateful for that are already in our lives we just don’t realise it. Give this a go and I think you will be surprised. My example above, hasn’t even taken you out of the house yet!    

Ponder on this. Have you ever thought what provides all the recourses that give you everything you have? The roof over your head; the food you eat; the means to heat your house, the water to quench your thirst, the material to make your clothes, all the air you’ll ever need to last your entire life? Well it is this wonderful, incredible, amazing, planet we inhabit. Have you ever said thank you to it? It is boundless and always will be! Saying thank you to this wonderful planet will help you realise what you have and where it came from. Also give thanks to the amazing individuals that made those materials into the things you have, even if you don’t know who they are or were!

Have you ever given thanks to your body? It will be with you for your entire life! Your body is an incredible thing. You’re able to taste, touch, smell, hear and see everything around you, taking it all in. Giving thanks to your body parts is a great way to make you aware of the things around you as you do.

A Reminder to give Thanks (Gratitude Stone)

Some of you may have come across the use of a ‘Gratitude Stone’. The idea is to place or keep a small stone, either in a pocket, purse or wallet, so whenever you reach for money to pay for something it will remind you to give thanks for having the money and for the item you are buying.

It doesn’t only apply to the purchasing of something. You may just see or feel it and should be your reminder to give thanks and appreciation to something.

The same principle applies when you go to bed or change into evening attire. Many of us tend to empty our pockets when we do so, it is here that you will pull out the gratitude stone and remind yourself to give thanks for events during the day just gone.

Hopefully you get the idea. 

You don’t have to use a stone. It could be anything that reminds you to give thanks and appreciation for what you have or experienced during the day.

It can also be used for things that you want but don’t have yet. This will aid in its manifestation. You should also use it to remind you to give thanks to all your experiences wanted, unwanted, liked or disliked. Acceptance and gratitude towards every experience whether good or bad will bring you the things you really want in your life.

Maintain an 'Attitude of Gratitude' to bring you a Multitude of the things you want to experience!

If you haven’t already, muscle test yourself to see if you know what it feels like to be grateful. Test to see if you have any beliefs that may be preventing it if you don’t.




I am grateful for the lovely sandwich I had for lunch and the kind smile the shop assistant gave me.

I am grateful for my comfy bed and warm bedding

I am grateful for my wonderful house.

I am grateful and thankful for my great job and the people I work with. We often have a good laugh together

I am so grateful and thankful that my car is so reliable.

It was really nice to have my lunch in the park today. The sun put smiles on everyone’s faces and everyone seemed so happy including me!

I am grateful for the team spirit I have with my work colleagues. We work really well together.

I am grateful to the abundant universe for all the beauty in my life. My snowdrops appeared today!

I was so lucky to find the perfect outfit for Peter’s party this weekend. Can’t wait to show it off!

I am grateful for the people I love. My family and friends

I am grateful for Billy my trusty old Labrador.

It was great reading that glossy magazine today. It has given me some great ideas for my bathroom and I know there’s a sale coming up soon on some the things I want, yippee!

I am grateful for my brother popping over with his lawn mower this evening. It saves me having to pick it up!


As you can see, you don’t have to start everything with ‘I am grateful for’. You can write a paragraph or just a simple list.

When writing down or saying ‘thank you’ for the things you are grateful for try and feel your gratitude. This will help ‘cement’ an ‘association’ of gratitude with what you are grateful for.

You can use this link to print off an example of a simple gratitude journal sheet or simply use a piece of paper or note book and start a gratitude journal. Remember that you can use a ‘Gratitude Journal’ for things that haven’t yet come in to your experience like you would when using a ‘Vision Board’. What ever you decide to use, it is sometimes helpful to use pictures cut from magazines, photos you have taken or even drawings of your own. Use what ever helps you in feeling grateful for what you have and what you want. You will find it will attract and give you more to be happy and grateful about!
