What are Affirmations?
Affirmations are positive statements made in the present tense designed to counteract a negative belief you currently hold.

Affirmations support the changes you want to make in your life by directing ‘positive affirmed’ statements based on the area in your life you want to change. This is achieved by the repetition of these affirming phrases. They can have profound effects as the changes start to take hold and break through your limiting thoughts and beliefs.

When using affirmations you are attempting to convince yourself something is true.

Definition of an affirmation:
1. the act of affirming or the state of being affirmed
2. a statement of the existence or truth of something; assertion
3. something declared : a positive declaration
4. (Law) a solemn declaration permitted on the grounds of conscientious objection to taking an oath.


It is important to note that the beliefs we currently hold were probably put there by affirmations without knowing it. For example when we first participated in an activity which perhaps didn’t go as well as we expected, the experience cemented a thought that we would think every time this activity came into our experience. The repetition will eventually make it a belief.

This applies to anything we read or see if it feels true to you or continues to activate the same response.

This is not always a negative thing. When you first burnt yourself you learnt not to do it again!

This applies to all areas of our lives. There are so many of us that grew up with parents, guardians, teachers or those we saw as authority figures that instilled their limiting beliefs in us.

Once you start using affirmations you will begin noticing the negative statements others make on simple matters. You will be surprised.

I used to play a game where I would pick up on the negative twist and words used by news presenters and reporters before I stopped watching and reading newspapers altogether!



Where should I direct my affirmations?

Our lives are dictated by our thoughts that are influenced by the beliefs we hold in our subconscious which normally go unnoticed. When you find life is not moving the way you feel it should or the direction you want, this will give you an indication of where you have limiting beliefs

If it’s a lack of money, low self esteem, not achieving your goals, lack of motivation, your job, then these are the areas to which you should be using and directing your affirmations. Our beliefs influence all areas of our lives controlling our thoughts in directions that may not be beneficial to what we want to experience.

“Our conscious mind is unaware of more than 85% of what we hold in our subconscious”.

It might be difficult for you to uncover some of your beliefs so please take a look at the muscle testing article in the resources. This will help you to uncover some of the beliefs you hold.

When you start using affirmations they may feel strange. You may encounter resistance from your current thoughts as they will be in opposition to what you currently believe but what we are trying to do is change those limiting beliefs that are currently influencing your thoughts.

The opposing thoughts may come in the form of ‘This is silly’, ‘I can’t really do that’ or ‘I’ll do this later’.

As you practise, you will start to notice these opposing thoughts which you can counteract by using an affirmation to push back.

Think of affirmations like drops of water falling on a stone or rock. At first there is no change but eventually the drops of water will change the shape and look of the stone or rock.



How should affirmations be used?

Affirmations should always be used in the present tense, this is because you are trying to create a ‘present’ you want to experience.

When using affirmations you should really ‘FEEL’ them as you repeat them or hear them. Try and resonate with the positive feeling and emotion.

Affirmation guidelines:
  • Make them positive. ALWAYS accentuate the positive when saying them.
  • Keep them in the present tense.
  • Use words that feel right for your way of thinking
  • Make sure they are being directed towards a negative belief
  • Use words that give power and feeling
  • Keep them as short as possible.
  • Affirmation MUST be completely unambiguous.
If you say ‘I want to be Rich’ then you are making a ‘future tense’ statement, so your wish will never be fulfilled since it will remain something that is always still to come!

Always ensure your statements are ‘Positive’. This is because your subconscious doesn’t recognise negatives like ‘not’. For example if you say ‘I am not poor’ or ‘I am not fat’ the subconscious will translate these and accept them as ‘I am poor’, ‘I am fat’.

Avoid using words like “don’t”, “isn’t” and “can’t”. This is because the Subconscious mind doesn’t understand or accept such words.

The subconscious does not process information as this is done by the conscious. It can’t distinguish between what is good or bad, right or wrong. So what we put in is what we get out, garbage in garbage out!

You can also write affirmations out. Use cards with a separate affirmation on each. This is quite a good way to reinforce them. You can then also read them out again and again, building up your own set of affirmations. You could even stick them up around the house, on your mirror, your computer as a reminder.

Try and repeat your affirmations several times a day for a month or more if possible if there are only a few you are using. If you are using a long list try and repeat them at least once a day for a minimum of a month. When you speak or write down your affirmation try and ‘feel’ them.

Remember in order to change your beliefs you have to ‘bombard’ your subconscious with the affirmations that are associated with thoughts of your desires to change your beliefs. Many of your beliefs were built up over time so they may take a while to take effect. Persevere and they will.



Why not record your own set of affirmations. These can then be played back whenever you like. I have used this method when travelling to and from work.

Record each affirmation in the first and second person. For example:

“You are lovable because you exist”
“I am lovable because I exist”
“You are in control of your life”
“I am in control of my life”

You don’t have to do this. You can just record them in the first person.

As each affirmation was played I repeated them silently to myself but always in the first person “I”. So each affirmation was repeated twice.

The reason for recording them in the second person is when hearing them as if coming from someone else, it helps reinforce the affirmation.

If you don’t like your own voice, ask a friend or family member to speak them for you.
